Dayak artistes Gabriel Fairuz Louis and Royston John Kulleh sparkle during ‘The Adjourning Night’ showcase
KUCHING: It was a spectacular evening at the Old Court House here on Dec 4, where fans of the Dayak music industry gathered for a musical showcase hosted by award-winning Iban singers Gabriel Fairuz Louis and Royston John Kulleh.
Deemed to be the first of its kind held by the Dayak music community, the showcase dubbed ‘The Adjourning Night’ successfully attracted over 100 music fans that came to enjoy live unplugged performances of songs of different genres.
Guest singers Zenna Felicia and Raphael Edward also joined in to entertain the crowd and all the performances were accompanied by local band ‘Atas Pokok’.
“This concert aims to bring the Dayak music industry to a higher level in the national and international music industry. It also serves as a platform for Iban artistes to perform with their fans,” said Gabriel.
Gabriel and Roy raised the curtains with Ello’s ‘Pergi Untuk Kembali’, before continuing with Gabriel performing solo with his first ever self-composed English song with lyrics written by Ronney Bukong entitled ‘The Promise’.
Others songs Gabriel sang included ‘Pechaya’, ‘Nengkadah Langit’, ‘Ditakah Tasik Biru’, ‘Aku Te Malu’ and super hit song ‘Genggam Jariku’.
Teen heart-throb Roy of Sarawakian avant-garde music band ‘Nading Rhapsody’ continued to entertain the crowd with songs of various genres including Anuar Zain’s ‘Perpisahan’ which left the audience in awe. He moved the audience to tears as he told stories of a personal nature to him and his band members on death, dying and loss.
Former AMG Rising Star finalists Raphael and Zenna brought the house down with heart-thumping songs including Lionel Richie and Diana Ross’ famous duet, ‘Endless Love’.
Gabriel was the first solo artiste to revolutionise the Iban music industry and win numerous awards including Best Dayak Album, Best Iban Song, Best Dayak Pop Artiste, Best Dayak Ballad Artiste, and Best Dayak Male Artiste at the Dayak Music Awards (AMD) organised by Dayak Artistes and Musicians Association (Dama) in 2014.
In 2013, his song ‘Pechaya’ (Believe) made the 30-year-old Iban singer and songwriter from Sibu known internationally when he was awarded the Diploma Award for Best Country Hit during the XXII Discovery International Pop Music Festival in Varna, Bulgaria.
Meanwhile, Roy was the winner of the Rainforest Waterfront Fest in 2012. He has also been involved in various festivals including the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) 2012, Borneo Jazz Festival 2013, Penang World Music Festival 2014, Kuala Lumpur International Arts Festival 2015, and most recently the Tong Tong Festival held in the Netherlands this year.
