Thousands of local and foreign visitors flocked the Kuching Waterfront to be part of the wonderful traditional festival

Warisan Wawasan Kampung Sejaie reigned supreme among the contestants battling it out with spectacular performances in the final of the ‘bermukun’ competition held at Square Tower, Kuching Waterfront here recently.

The group bagged home cash prizes of RM3, 000 after a gruelling fight against Fajar Menyinsing Indera Kayangan which was placed second at the grand final and received RM2, 000.

Second runner-up was Cucu Cicit Dayang Kabong who received cash prizes of RM1, 500. All winning teams received a trophy and certificates of participation.

A total of 11 groups took part in the annual competition was organised by the National Department of Culture and Arts (JKKN) under the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia in collaboration with the State Government and Grup Teater Ngoncong in conjunction with the Sarawak Gendang (Drum) Festival 2016 and Kuching Waterfront Festival 2016.

The groups were  Sri Mang from Samarahan, Indera Budaya (Mukah), Sri Buana (Kuching), Seri Budaya Sarawak (Kuching), Gemas Hilir (Kuching),  Fajar Menyinsing Indera Kayangan (Samarahan), Warisan Wawasan Kampung Sejaie (Samarahan), Warisan Budaya Bersatu (Kuching), Cucu Cicit Dang Kabong(Daro), Tukuk Wan Su (Kuching), and Mukun Selendang Sutera from Brunei Darussalam with a total of 55 performers altogether.

The activity synonymous with the local community here was also one of the highlights for the Sarawak Regatta this year and managed to attract thousands of domestic and foreign visitors to come and enjoy spectacular singing and dance performances.

The panel of judges for the grand final were professionals in the art of ‘bermukun’ which include Datuk Sarbanun Marican, Safar Gaffar and Abang Seruji Abang Muhi.

The prize presentation ceremony was officiated by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Abang Openg who is also the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture.

Also present were Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia Policy Division (Culture) undersecretary Saraya Arbi, Assistant Minister for Entrepreneur Development Datuk Naroden Majais, Ministry of Tourism Sarawak permanent secretary Datu Ik Pahon Joyik, JKKN deputy director general (Policy and Planning) Mohamad Razy Mohamad Nor, JKKN Sarawak director Zaifri Husin, Sarawak Cultural Village general manager Jane Lian Labang, and Ministry of Tourism and Culture Sarawak director Suriya Charles Buas.
