Joke backfires for school principal

KUCHING: The case of a Form Five student from SMK Bandar Sibu allegedly being barred from sitting for their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2016 Math paper recently may have been the result of a misunderstanding.
State Education director Rakayah Madon said following investigations into the matter, she had been made to understand that the school principal had not prohibited the student from sitting for the paper.
“This may have been the result of a joke between the school principal and the student when the former stated that if the student did not pass the trial exam, they may not be able to sit for the real paper.
“Unfortunately, the joke was taken literally by the student as well as three others.”
Rakayah, who did not reveal the student’s gender to protect their identity, also confirmed that the student sat for other papers, except for Mathematics.
“The report was lodged to the Ministry of Education yesterday (Nov 22) and the State Education Department is waiting for the ministry’s approval for further action to be taken against the principal.
“We have also issued a warning to the principal against making any more statements or actions that would suggest or indicate that a student would be prevented from taking an exam.”
