SERIAN: Forest Department Sarawak (FDS) enforcement foiled an illegal logging operation at Jalan Sebemban, nine kilometres from the Rayang junction here on Nov 3.

FDS Preventive and Enforcement Division confiscated 21 logs of various sizes and species worth about RM5, 000 to RM7, 000 in the market.

“Among the 21 illegal logs that were confiscated, three logs was in the middle of being processed into processed timber for some particular reason by some parties who are operating to expand about an acre of land here,” said an FDS spokesperson.

He attributed the success of the raid to the trust and confidence that the local communities have in FDS.

“We always appreciate the public for providing us with the information on suspected illegal logging here, and we make every effort to follow up on each and every report received including this following a public tip-off,” he added.

The case is being investigated under Section 90 (1) of the Forest Ordinance 2015. The penalty upon conviction is a maximum fine from RM25, 000 to RM100, 000 and imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years.
