Extra teaching material, special allocations requested by teachers and kindergarten caregivers

Themed ‘Every Child can Speak English’, participants of the 11th Preschool Education Convention proposed that the state government prepare a special allocation for Teaching and Learning English (Kursus Khas Pengajaran dan Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggeris) for the teachers and kindergarten caregivers in Sarawak.

Besides the special allocation, Welfare, Women and Community Wellbeing Minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah said the participants also proposed that teaching and learning materials as well as training opportunities in every district in Sarawak to accommodate to the needs of the teachers.

“We feel that the state government should consider the proposal especially when they realised that the investing in developing the capability and efficiency female educators is a wise investment,” said Fatimah.

According to Fatimah, out of the 41, 907 teacher serving under the state Education Department, about 63 per cent of them are women, while there are about 5, 233 female teachers in the pre-childhood education.

Held in Sibu from September 23 to 25, the convention was participated by 560 participants in which almost 95 per cent of them are female teachers.

“Women teachers who form the majority of the work force in Sarawak are indeed very important and influential architects, developers and builders of our future human resources,” said Fatimah.

“There are our assets, which must be positioned strategically in our educational catch-up plan so that we will no longer linger in the bottom half of the national education performance league table,” she said.

Organised by the Family and Women Department (JWKS), the state-level Women Day celebration is held annually in appreciation of women in Sarawak in various field such as economy, education, social, sport, politics and art.

Themed ‘Sarawak Women in Education-Shaping the Mind, Body and Spirit’, this year ‘s celebration gives recognition to women’s contribution in guiding and educating of children.

Also present during the state level Women Day celebration wereChief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem and his wife Datin Patinggi Dato Datuk Jamilah Anu, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang and Dato Sri Empiang Jabu and Dtato Dr Adi Badiozaman Tuah.
