Educationists rewarded during State-level Women’s Day 2016

Congratulations to Dato Ursula Goh Dumpangol for winning the Datuk Patinggi Laila Taib Award during the state level women day celebration of 2016!

Ursula, who has been active in women-related associations since 1965, is also the adviser for the Sarawak Federation of Women Institutes (PPWS) as well as the President for the Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW) in the 1980s and has represented Malaysia in the United Nation International Women Forum on The Commission on the Status of Women conference.

Themed ‘Sarawak Women in Education: Shaping Mind, Body and Spirit’, the state-level Women’s Day 2016 was held to give recognition to the group of women who are involved in the development of individuals, family, community and nation through their significant participation in the process of guiding and educating of children.

Other awards presented during the state level women day celebration was the Chief Minister’s Award to acknowledge the role of women in various activities and field.

The recipients included Dayang Azizah Abang Zaidan for the Chief Minister’s Woman Entrepreneur Award, Serina Sauni for the Chief Minister’s Woman Leadership Award, the Registered Childcare Providers Association of Sarawak (Persatuan Pengasuh Kanak-Kanak Berdaftar Sarawak-PPBS) for the Excellent Woman Organisation Award and Prof Madya Dr. Madeline Berma for the Chief Minister Special Award in Education.

Serina Sauni (left) receiving the Chief Minister’s Woman Leadership Award. Born in 1956 in Miri, Serina was a school principal in Sekolah Menengah Sains Miri in 2009, the  State Education Director in 2014 and the director of Institusi Aminuddin Baki in 2015

“The aim of this book is to honour some eminent individuals who have contributed immensely to the field of education particularly in Sarawak,” said Minister of Welfare, Women and Community Wellbeing Datuk Fatimah Abdullah in her speech.

“This book is not intended to glorify a defined group of women, but rather aimed at filling the information gap on many years of women’s contribution and participation in the education sector,” she added.

Associate Professor Dr. Madeline Berma (left) receiving the Chief Minister Special Award in Education. Dr Madeline received her PhD from the University of Hull, England in 1997 and is working at University Kebangsaan Malaysia. She is also the director of Pusat Kepimpinan Wanita Tun Fatimah Hashim. She has also done research on the development of the economy, rural development, micro-entrepreneurship, and women in entrepreneur and leadership.

Aside from the publication of ‘Sarawak Women in Education: Shaping Mind, Body and Spirit’, the Sarawak Women and Family Council has published six other titles which reflects the contributions and involvement of Sarawak women in various sectors relevant to the themes over the years the books are published.

They were Sarawak Women-Treading the Path of Post-Independent Years; Sarawak Women in Politics;Sarawak Women in Business; Sarawak Women in Volunteerism-Caring Hearts Touching Lives; Sarawak Women in Politics-Pioneers; and Sarawak Women in the Arts.

Also present during the state level women day celebration wereChief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem and his wife Datin Patinggi Dato Jamilah Anu, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang and his wife Dato Sri Empiang Jabu and Dato Dr Adi Badiozaman Tuah.
