Yayasan Sarawak is aiming to capture three gold, two silver and four bronze medals in the upcoming Inter-State Foundation Sports Carnival (Pesaya) to be held in Sabah.
A total of 63 athletes will be competing in the 12th edition of the bi-annual games from Nov 11 to 19.
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem handed the state’s flag to Yayasan Sarawak director Azmi Bujang, who is also the Chef de Mission for the games during the flag handing over ceremony at Yayasan Sarawak in Petra Jaya today (Nov 2).
“Over the last two years in Johor, we managed to get two silvers for petanque and carom, as well as one bronze for netball.
“Our greatest achievement was during the Pesaya 2003 where we were the host and emerged as first runner-up overall,” said Kelab Yayasan Sarawak chairman Easmawi Razak.
This year, previous host Johor has the most number of athletes, followed by Sabah and Sarawak.
“Besides the 63 athletes, Yayasan Sarawak will also be sending several officials to Sabah to accompany the athletes there, in rotation starting with the director for the opening ceremony,” he said.
The 13 state contingents will be competing in 11 sport events: petanque, football, carom, bowling, badminton, netball, dart, volleyball, futsal, ping pong and golf.
The athletes will also be competing in two other events including golf (VIP) and folk games.
“Looking back at our previous games in Johor last two years, our state contingent did wel as we were named first runner-up for carom and first runner-up for petanque. The rest of the games have also seen major improvements among the athletes,” he added.
Petanque, football and carom are the state’s strongest sports to win gold medals.
Also present were Chief Minister’s wife Datin Patinggi Datuk Jamilah Anu.
