Despite the scorching heat on Saturday afternoon, hundreds of Pokemon fans managed to come together in front of the Kuching Waterfront Bazaar here to be part of the first ever Pokemon Go KCH Meetup event.

Organised by arts and entrepreneurship movement Momentum KCH in collaboration with Hitz FM Sarawak, the gathering is probably one of the first large scale Pokemon Go player gatherings since the game was released in Malaysia on Aug 6.

Participants were invited to hunt for Pokemon at the Kuching Waterfront, which had quite a few lures (a module that attracts Pokemon to a PokeStop for 30 minutes) in place.

“The Pokemon Go game has been getting tremendous feedback and response among its fans, and looking at the increasing popularity which ignites the passion among locals towards the game, Momentum KCH decided to bring them together in one spot.

“We never expected the turnout to be this great as we only expected friends, co-workers and family members. Nevertheless, we are grateful for the assistance of Pokemon trainers in spreading the word online,” said Roxanne of the first community bonding event of its kind organised by the movement.

The meetup was made merrier with performances by Bitachiness Soul who kicked off the event with a dance routines, followed by beatboxers Ricky Ho and Badrul Ahadd who showcased their talent in beatboxing.

Prior to the Pokemon hunting session, participants were also entertained by Ellymon and Vignes, who left them in awe of their mesmerising vocals and musical talent.

The free-to-attend event came to the attention of its participants on Facebook last week and was also publicised through radio announcements by Hitz FM Sarawak.

Roxanne added that there will be another meetup soon, thanks to the encouraging feedback from participants.
Pokemon player and beatboxer Ricky Ho said that he was happy to be among the group who had gathered to have fun.

“The Pokemon Go game is unifying. I love Pokemon since I was a kid and I played the game on every possible platform. I was touched to see lots of people here who also love the game the same way that I do.

“I am looking forward to more meetups similar to this in the future,” said Ho, adding that he had joined Team Mystic in the game.

There are three rival ‘factions’ players can choose upon reaching Level 5 in the game, namely Team Mystic, Team Instinct and Team Valor.

Prior to the meetup, Hitz FM Sarawak had also conducted an outdoor broadcast session at several places nearby, including in Plaza Merdeka.

“Hitz supported the Pokemon Go event created by Momentum Kch after we saw their event on Facebook. We decided to contact the organiser and work together with them.

“We came to hype things up and bring along our own Bulbasaur!” a representative of the radio station said, referencing Hitz FM announcer Miah dressed up as one of the creatures from the game.
