The Sarawak Sukma 2016 tennis team ready to face their competitors and defend their overall champions title in the upcoming Sukma XVIII.

After months of intensive training at local and international venues, the Sarawak tennis team is ready to compete and defend their overall champions title in the upcoming Sukma.

At Perlis Sukma 2014, the team made Sarawak proud by winning three golds, two silvers and four bronzes, while at Melaka Sukma 2010 they won four golds, three silvers and three bronzes. They also won the overall champions title for both years.

“We hope that we will be able to bring back two gold medals from Sukma XVIII and defend our title as the overall champions after our latest winning in 2014,” said Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) president Dato Patrick Liew when interviewed by The Borneo Post SEEDS recently.

“Depending on the luck of the draw, we might also win one bonus gold medal.”

Players Linda Liong Ting Ting, Alia Azman, Tan Lin Xin, Alvin Teng Wee Jie, Rohizat Achop, Low Zhe Han, Aslina Chua An Ping, Isaac Law, Belinda Chai Wei Xin, and Muhd Aiman will be competing in the tennis tournaments set to take place at the Sarawak Club and the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) Tennis Centre in Kuching from July 22 to 30.

“They have been going through several intensive training, at both local and international venues.  Alvin and Rohizat trained in Romania and Germany for six months, Low and Aslina trained in the USA for three months, Isaac trains in Australia.

“Belinda and Muhd Aiman trained at Kuala Lumpur national training centre,” he said.

Liew pointed out that the state government had also been a great help in ensuring the team continues its glory in tennis by upgrading and building new training facilities, considered the best in Malaysia.

“Thus, we will strive to give our best effort in defending our overall champions title for Sukma 2016,” Liew said.

“Our dream is also to make Sarawak to become the best host for tennis events.”

Over the years, SLTA has won several awards including the Malaysian School Sports Council (MSSM) Best Association Award in 2003, Social Development Ministry (KPS) Best Association in 2008, Johan Bintang Sarawak (JBS) Best Association in 2012, and JBS Leadership Award in 2013.
