Sarawakian student makes top 10 in international neuroscience competition
SMK Methodist Sibu student Benjamin Wong Yi Ren made the nation proud when he emerged as the one of the 10 best participants in the International Brain Bee (IBB) Championship held recently.
He competed against 26 other participants from around the world like Germany, USA, Italy, Iran, Romania, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Poland, Israel, Singapore, England among others.
Wong won the Malaysian Brain Bee Challenge (MBBC) held in May where he also made history by being the first participant from Sarawak to take part in the competition and win. After his success, he went on to represent the country at the international level in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The state-level project was under the University Community Transformation Centre (UCTC) Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) through collaboration between Unimas and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) led by Associate Professor Dr Norsiah Fauzan.
The programme was a Unimas initiative to foster interest among Sarawakian students in the field of neuroscience.
Wong’s participation had also received contributions from several parties including the Bawang Assan Community Service Centre, Pusat Pembangunan Pendidikan Yayasan Sarawak, Batu Kawah assemblyman Datuk Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian, and Fazruddin Abdul Rahman from P194 Petra Jaya Service Centre.
