Majlis Sumbangan Kasih Ramadan 2016 was organised for the first time at SMK Green Road

In conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri, SMK Green Road organised ‘Majlis Sumbangan Kasih Ramadan’ 2016 on June 30th for the first time.

The event, which was also attended by by the parents or guardians of the students, saw 35 less fortunate SMK Green Road students receiving donations of cooking oil and rice from the school.

According to the principal of SMK Green Road, Catherine Ritikos, most of the donation came from the teachers and also some from the school funds.

“I am hoping that this programme can create awareness among the students of the importance of giving back to the community and reaching out to the less fortunate, regardless of race,” said Catherine.

“Another thing is that, most kids these days are so fortunate to be growing up with everything given to them, but they need to be reminded that there are those that are not as fortunate as they are,” she added.

While this may be the first time the school has organised ‘Majlis Sumbangan Kasih Ramadan’, the students were involved in a donation programme a few months ago.

According to Catherine, as part of the the students’ project during civic education, they donated items to the less fortunate through non governmental organisations (NGOs).

“During that time, the students were not directly involved with the community itself, but rather donating items through the NGO,”said Catherine.

Hoping to making it a frequent affair, Catherine added that the school hopes to organise more of these kinds of events during any festive season such as Chinese New Year, Gawai or Christmas.

“We do not have much but this is to show the students that that there are ways we can do to reach out to the less fortunate and help them,” said Catherine adding that in future, the school was hoping to get the students involved in their upcoming school donation programmes.
