#GBGKCH looks to leveraging on Google MapMaker

KUCHING: Following its successful workshop last month, Google Business Group (GBG) Kuching organised the fourth edition of its Growth Hacking workshop series, taking a closer look at Google MapMaker, and how to leverage on its features to benefit businesses.

The workshop was led by Google MapMaker regional lead for Malaysia Desmond Chai, who shared that up to 30% of Google searches are focusing on maps (which is a strong enough case to ensure that your business data is up to date in Google).

Desmond, who is also the chapter manager for GBG Kuala Lumpur, shared some other features that businesses could leverage on, including Google Local Guides and Google My Maps.

Local Guides are Google account users who volunteer to update information on Google Maps, and help ensure the information is up to date, and highlight special features, photos and recommendations within their communities.

My Maps on the other hand, is a Google feature that allows users to make custom maps on Google, such as favourite restaurants, or best cycling routes, that can be then shared with the friends or the wider public.

One of the key takeaways from the session is that anyone is able to edit and improve the data in Google Maps, all the user needs is a Google account. The system works on peer-review and trust moderation.

Jeremy Baxter, a media freelancer, is himself an enthusiast utilising maps to find his way around, and is keen to volunteer as a Google Local Guide. “I think the idea of volunteering to improve local maps’ accuracy is a noble effort, and I hope more people will join in on the fun!”

Christina, a marketing executive, was excited to be exposed to the internet technologies available. “I learnt that it’s good to be exposed to new things, and explore the many opportunities available around us.”

Pin Hoong, a local entrepreneur, says he enjoys the GBG Kuching’s events and has been attending all the workshops so far. “I will definitely be looking into improving my business’ Google Maps presence after this!” he added.
