Celebrate the harvest with MakanMakan Gawai on June 18
MakanMakan has returned! This time with a chance for interested individuals to learn more about Dayak food and their culture.
In conjunction with the Gawai Dayak celebrations, Yayasan Perpaduan Sarawak (YPS) and the Sarawak Development Institute (SDI) together with The Champions are organising MakanMakan Gawai on June 18 at the Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) Hall from 6 pm to 10.30 pm.
MakanMakan is a cultural culinary sharing and experience aimed at learning and sharing the diverse food culture, practices and traditions of the many ethnic groups within Malaysia. This is the second of four annual MakanMakan to be held this year, in conjunction with the four major cultural festivals in Malaysia – Chinese New Year, Hari Gawai, Hari Raya AidilFitri and Deepavali.
YPS and its partners seek to provide a communal platform which invites all Malaysians and non-Malaysians to learn and understand more about one another’s food culture while promoting stronger cross-cultural understanding and acceptance.
Each MakanMakan features the traditional and authentic cuisine, as well as, introductions to ethnic food practices and traditions of the ethnic groups to educate our community about the rich heritage and culture of each ethnic community, in turn, directly contributing to the preservation of Malaysian culinary practices and traditions.
MakanMakan Gawai will be attended by the Minister of Youth and Sports and Solidarity, Datuk Sri Michael Manyin Jawong. The collaborative-partners for the event are the Ministry of Tourism Sarawak, Majlis Adat Istiadat, Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA), the Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU), SUPERMAIN, Awah Café and Aroma Café.
Among the highlights of cultural practices at the MakanMakan Gawai are the welcome drink, miring, dayak music and cultural dances, renyai and ngulung tikai.
Those who have bought tickets to attend are encouraged to come in traditional Dayak attire or smart casual attire.
Guests should note that everyone will be seated on the floor on mats, similar to Gawai Dayak celebrations in the villages and are urged to dress in attire suited to seating on the floor.
