Volunteerism essential to strengthening bonds between community members

Active volunteerism plays a pivotal role in society, said Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.
Most of the aid needed by the community starts from volunteering activities, especially in times of emergency.
Fadillah, who is also Petra Jaya MP, hopes that more people will take part in an effort to further enhance volunteerism among the community.
“Apart from strengthening the relationship among the multiracial community, such volunteerism movement can really help in providing necessary assistance needed by the community,” he said.
He was speaking at the ‘Gotong-Royong Perdana & Penyampaian Sijil Bomba Komuniti N6 Tupong’ at Taman Sri Harmoni near Jalan Matang here on March 20.
On providing for the Community Bomba in that area, Fadillah said that the ministry will try to provide proper facilities for the team of volunteers including rescue vehicles.
“We will try to set some provisions to provide special vehicles for the Community Bomba. It is important that we are able to increase their enthusiasm to keep them active in helping the community including in helping them to manage fire emergencies while they wait for the arrival of the State Fire and Rescue Department.
“This area is located at remote location and looking at the insufficient number of fire stations here with the congestion especially at peak times to reach this area, the Community Bomba helps us a lot,” Fadillah explained.
Meanwhile, the State Bomba director Nor Hisham Mohamad added that there is a total of 78 registered Community Bomba in Sarawak to now.
“As for now, we have a total of 78 Community Bomba in the State and 23 of them are from Petra Jaya constituency,” he said.
In his speech, Nor Hisham hopes to make the Community Bomba in Petra Jaya as an example towards the involvement in the uniformed units in other States.
He said that every member of Community Bomba was exposed to skills training in handling any emergency.
“They (Community Bomba) are considered as Community Emergency Response Team when an emergency happens while waiting for the arrival of the State Fire and Rescue Department,” Hisham explained.
To date, Hisham added that three teams of Community Bomba in the Tupong state constituency were established.
