Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) declared its first university nursery open on March 12, making it the first public university in Sarawak to create a child-care centre in the workplace.

Efforts towards establishing the Unimas nursery began in 2001 with the establishment of the Unimas Kindergarten located at the east campus.

The kindergarten may have stopped operating in 2012, but the completion of Tun Abang Salahuddin Islamic Centre (PITAS) in 2013 saw the reopening of the Unimas nursery in 2014.

After two years of operation, response from Unimas staff have been very encouraging with some being put on the waiting list.

Currently the nursery has approximately nine babies aged between 0 and 12 months, 13 children of 1 to 2 years old while the other 30 are children of 2 to 4 years old.

Minister of Welfare, Women and Family Development Datuk Fatimah Abdullah officiated the opening.
