Portuguese and South African flavours right at your doorstep
Since the opening of Nando’s first branch in Kuching in December 2015, it has always managed to attract a long queue of diners especially during the lunch or dinner hours without fail.
Boasting a great fusion of strong flavours and a warm ambiance, Nando’s is notable for its family-friendly setting with big tables and comfortable seats, making it the perfect place to gather with family and friends.
A fusion of Portuguese and South African flavours, Nando’s takes great pride in its famous peri-peri flame grilled chicken as well as their signature peri-peri sauces.
The word ‘peri-peri’ refers to the African Bird’s-Eye Chili, the key ingredient that gives their signature grilled chicken its mouthwatering flavours.
Marinated for about 24 hours, the flavours from the unique peri-peri chili is infused perfectly into the chicken before being grilled.
While the grilled chicken may be Nando’s main star, there are several other notable dishes worth trying.
For starters, I tried some of the appetizers on their menu, which is highly recommended for first timers as it gives them a sample of what Nando’s food tastes like, which is bursting with flavours, appetising and filling.
Available till March, the sweet potato fries is must try as the sweet crunchy sweet potato strips are complemented by its creamy dipping sauce.
In addition to that, I also tried the ‘All Together Now’ platter consisting of pita bread, hummus with Peri-Peri Drizzle, Red Pepper Dip and spicy mixed olives.
As most of the Nando’s dishes is sprinkled by their signature peri-peri powder or topped with their iconic sauces, it is recommended that customers try Nando’s designer drinks to counterbalance the spiciness.
Nando’s has an exotic selection of designer drinks which are Madeira Red, a sweet pomegranate lemonade Sprite drink with sugared rim, the Iced Mintea, an iced tea drink with a dash of mint, the Citrus Bliss, a grapefruit juice along with Sprite and the Sparkling Apple.
Having tried all four unique drinks, my personal favourite was the Iced Mintea as the dash of mint in the drink is refreshing and complements the spiciness of the food and hot weather. On the other hand, the sugary rim of the Madeira Red is picture worthy for Instagram lovers.
Other notable dishes are the chicken Caesar wrap and chicken breast burger.
Nando’s also offers vegetarian meals such as black mushroom and halloumi wrap and veggie burger.
If you are feeling a bit festive, however, you might want to try their impressive Espetada Carnival which is flame-grilled chicken thighs marinated in peri-peri sauce stuffed with feta and parsley and skewered with mixed peppers.
Juicy and tender, the skewered chicken dish is as satisfying as it is fascinating to look at.
Aside from that, another option is the grilled chicken cataplana. Quite similar to our local briyani rice dish, the spicy and flavourful rice and piquant chicken dish is enjoyable to eat.
To wrap it all up, Nando’s offers several dessert options for you to choose from such as the caramel cheesecake, chocolate crunch rolls, and chocolate mud pies with ice cream. My personal favourite, however is Natas, a traditional Portuguese custard tart. Not overwhelmingly sweet, it has a soft filling and crunchy exterior and is the perfect treat to end your meal.
