After winning the first season of Malaysian Idol in 2004, vocal powerhouse Jaclyn Joshua Thanaraj – better known as Jaclyn Victor – continues to dazzle in the music industry with her love and immense talent for singing.

After tying the knot to American singer-songwriter Shawn Rivera in August last year, Jaclyn gave birth to their son, Jonah Joshiah Rivera on August 24 this year.

“I just started working again after having a baby and thank goodness I have been very busy after that,” said the 36-year-old singer who is currently on a promotional tour around the country for her latest single ‘Seindah Mimpi’.

Released in April this year under the KRU Music label, the song is also available in English entitled ‘Sweeter than a Dream’ and the music video for both versions is available on YouTube.

Apart from promoting the new single, Asia’s Divette is also actively singing for corporate shows around the country and was recently a guest singer for Cats FM’s #CatsDayOut Volume 3 concert held at Kota Samarahan.

“It is good for the organiser and people like me to be part of such event as I get to go out and meet people,” she said, adding that she was looking forward for more opportunities to come to Sarawak and meet her fans some time soon.

Known for her vocal prowess, Jaclyn started singing in clubs and hotel lounges and self-produced an album titled ‘Dream’ featuring songs she co-wrote at the age of 18.

In 2004, she entered Malaysian Idol, and after several spectacular shows, she was announced as the champion,  landing her a contract with Sony BMG Entertainment. Later on, she represented Malaysia in the first Asian Idol and Ikon Asean in 2007.

In 2012, she signed a recording deal with KRU Music and continued winning several music awards, including the XIII Shanghai Asian Music Festival Golden Prize in 2005, Song of the Year Award for her song ‘Gemilang’ during the Anugerah Juara Lagu in 2006, Best Female Artist award at Anugerah Planet Muzik (Singapore) in 2006, Album of the Year award at Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM) Malaysia in 2006, winner of Ikon Malaysia in 2007, and recently the Best Vocal award for her song ‘Ikut Rentakku’ during Anugerah Juara Lagu 28 in 2014.

When asked to comment on the local music industry scene today, Jaclyn said that she had seen it develop with a positively encouraging response.

“The music industry here today is diversifying and evolving.

“When you look at it five years ago, music was so much different. Today, when you turn on the radio you will notice there are a lot of younger artists who are just coming out where most of them are singing under independent labels and are just starting to do their own thing.

“We still have many very good singers today. It is just a difference in the styles of singing. Music is evolving,” she said.

Jaclyn hopes to still be singing five to 10 years from now.

“I hope that I will still be singing and be in the music industry. I hope that my existence will not fade and that I will always be relevant alongside the evolution of music today,” she added.

Although Jaclyn gave an outstanding performance as ‘Bhavani’ in Yasmin Ahmad’s 2009 drama ‘Talentime’, so much so that she was awarded the Most Promising Actress for the film at the 22nd Malaysian Film Festival that same year, “my main thing is still singing”.

She advises aspiring singers out there to always focus on their main reason for singing.

“Do not forget why you wanted to become a singer; your number one reason should be that you’re passionate about music and singing, and then the other things will come. Put that reason above all and keep on polishing your talent because music is always about learning.

“Also, always remember to be humble, grateful and stay grounded all the time,” she added.
