Microsoft Malaysia conducted a series of ImagineCup-related activities at the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak’s Faculty of Computer Science and IT, on October 20.

Hosted by Microsoft Corporation, ImagineCup is an annual competition which aims to bring young technologists from all over the world together to help solve some of the world’s toughest challenges.

Among several activities conducted at the faculty were the ‘Road to ImagineCup’, an introductory session on Microsoft Azure and an idea validation session.

The ‘Road to ImagineCup’ provided information about the competition and also the DreamSpark programme for students which supports technical education by providing access to Microsoft software for learning, teaching and research purposes.

With the hands-on workshop session, ‘Introduction to Microsoft Azure’, students got to learn about the cloud computing platform an infrastructure that will be used as a tool for the competition.

In the final session which was the ‘Idea Validation Session’, students presented their ideas for the competition to Microsoft representatives Dinesh Nair (Developer Experience and Evangelism), Zalina Abdul Halim (Audience Marketing Manager), and Aswin C. (Microsoft Evangelist) as well as other students, to obtain constructive feedback about their ideas.

In total, 70 students from Unimas attended the three sessions.

Competitions like ImagineCup encourage students to learn about the latest technologies and current developments in the ICT field, providing students the chance to test their knowledge and skills, and a valuable opportunity to improve their communication and soft skills.

The meeting with industry players at these sessions enable students to interact and network with students from other disciplines, and people who are already working in the ICT industry.
