Women ruled Iban music awards

The grand finale of Anugerah Carta Sapa Juara (ACSJ) held Sept 19 saw women dominating the Iban music awards with Melissa Francis emerging as the overall winner of the competition.
Her victory was witnessed by about 5,000 people who had come to the Dewan Tan Sri Datuk Amar Stephen Kalong Ningkan to support her and the other 11 finalists of the Iban music industry.
“I am very happy and grateful for winning this competition. The song ‘Pengerindu Tua’ is very meaningful to me because it tells the story of romance and love that is very significant to me,” she said, adding that she spent two weeks of intense training prepping for the grand final.
She won the cash prize of RM5, 000, a trophy and a certificate which the artiste generously said she would share with her family, friends and fans who have always been supporting her in the music industry.
“Apart from that, it will also be used to produce my new album. The yet-to-be-titled album will include six songs and is expected to be released latest by the end of this year,” she said when met after the competition.
During the grand final hosted by WAIfm deejays Rajesh and Stephanie, Florence Lo won Best Vocals with her song ‘Ai Mata Lelengau’, while Eisner Nala won Best Performance with her soulful and touching performance of ‘Penyayau Tebeleka Ketegal Pemula’.
They bagged RM2, 000 and RM1, 000 in cash prizes respectively, along with their winning trophies.
Special awards like ‘ACSJ 2015 Most Favourite Artist’ won by Rickie Andrewson was decided by votes through ACSJ official magazine ‘Senawah’, while Kelabu Papau took home the ‘ACSJ 2015 Most Sporting Artist’ award for his help in managing the competition, even though he was not selected as a finalist.
Other solo artists who competed in the grand finale of ACSJ 2015 include Julita James (with her song ‘Pengerindu Pengujung Nyawa’), Frederick Sut (‘Pengabis Ati’), Timothy (‘Janji Nyadi Ampa’), Pretty Nina (‘Aku Kediri’), Gabriel Fairuz Louis (‘Pengerindu Suba’), and bands Sullivan (‘Bakani’) and Loudness Empire (‘Pengerindu Nadai Penyangkai’). All finalists received a trophy, and certificate.
Other performances at the grand final included dance performance from Betong Cultural Group, and singing performances from guest artists including Lucy M (Best Vocal ACSJ 2014), Masterpiece (Best Performance ACSJ 2015), and The Crew (Overall Winner ACSJ 2014). ACSJ was accompanied by Kombo RTM.
ACSJ 2015 is an initiative of the Department of Broadcasting, Sarawak and WAIfm, MIRIfm, and SIBUfm radio services in collaboration with the Betong Resident’s Office to uplift the Iban music industry. Themed ‘Ngelatika Industri Muzik Iban’, ACSJ 2015 marked the second edition of the event.
All finalists were those who had topped WAIfm’s ‘Carta Sapa Juara’, MIRIfm’s ‘Carta Lagu Tebilang Iban’, and SIBUfm’s ‘Carta Hits Lagu-Lagu Iban’ charts chosen based on their popularity and audience votes throughout 2014 and had gone through the semi-finals that was held at RTM Sarawak on August 22.
Among those who attended the ceremony were Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang, RTM Sarawak director Salmah Ibrahim Melina, Betong resident Datu Romie Sigan Daniel, Betong deputy resident Galong Luang, Hock Peng Realty Sdn Bhd managing director Datuk Toh Chiew Hock, RTM Sarawak deputy director Jamel Seman, department heads, community leaders, artists, and art activists.
