KUCHING: Arts activists, art pioneers, and other talented individuals in ‘Bernopeng’ or ‘Bermukun’ are invited to participate in the ‘Pertandingan Gendang Melayu Sarawak’ to be held at Sarawak Tourism Complex on September 18 and 19.
The competition themed ‘Gendang Sarawak, The Rhythm of Unity’ is to be organised in conjunction with the ‘Year of Festivals 2015’ and ‘Kuching Waterfront Festival 2015’.
“Every ‘pemukun’ or ‘pemantun’ will only be allowed to use the Sarawak Malay language.
“Each team must be made up of two ‘Penandak’, two ‘Seh Gendang’ and a violinist, gong player, or accordionist,” said the organiser.
It is open to those aged 15 and above and no entry fee is required.
“The ‘bergendang’ activity is a treasure that symbolizes the harmony in the country and ‘Gendang Melayu Sarawak’ is a very popular activity in the State and is synonymous with the local community.
“Thus, the organisation of this competition is to lift the ‘Gendang Sarawak’ as ‘Icon of Unity’ through the involvement of various tribes in the Sarawak.
“It is hoped that it can also generate a consensus between the various ethnic groups in the State, while maintaining the national treasure through ‘bermukun’ competition and make ‘Gendang Sarawak’ to become a local and international tourism product,” the organiser added.
The competition will start at 10am until 10.30pm and members of the public are invited to enliven the event. Other activities such as singing and dancing performances, as well as sales and exhibitions await the visitors.
