Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology students at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) will now be able to broaden their knowledge in current networking and telecommunication data technologies with the setting up of the Unimas-Sacofa Telecommunication Laboratory.
Located at the Data Communication Lab, the laboratory which was completed in April this year is being supervised by the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department and offers eight training modules with all 49 laboratory equipment supplied by Sacofa, a one-stop-centre based on infrastructure and telecommunication services in Sarawak.
According to Unimas vice chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi, the modules will be able to accommodate the teaching and learning needs up to 50 end users at one time.
“Three university modules are also provided in this lab that includes the Basic Data Communication for Year 1 and 2 students, the Advanced Data Communication and Optical Communication Network for Year 3 and 4 students,” he said in his speech during the launching ceremony of Unimas-Sacofa Telecommunication Laboratory on July 30.
He added that the main objective of the Unimas Telecommunication Lab was to provide a network of industrial and university cooperation as a hub to train the trainers in networking and data communications sector.
“This will also provide opportunities for the academic staff to play a key role in various research and development activities in Sacofa, which in turn will place Unimas as the forefront contributor in the industrial development of the telecommunication sector, especially in Sarawak.
“It is also in line with the implementation of the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (Score) which is in need of advanced ICT and communication systems,” he explained.
He also stressed that the cooperation between university and industries are very important and a two-way relationship when the country’s workforce is in need of new and high quality skills.
“As a higher education institute with a decade of excellence, Unimas wished to continue its active role on contributing to the growth and development of our country’s education, as well as to continuously giving opportunities and space for collaborations in the learning and research sector.
“In relation to that, Unimas latest effort and commitment in leading the academicals excellence is to establish a joint venture with its industrial partner, Sacofa which is a one-stop-center based on infrastructure and telecommunication services in Sarawak,” he explained.
Numerous joint activities have been held between Unimas and Sacofa such as site visits by Unimas Engineering Faculty to Sacofa and discussions with Sacofa experts on development and technical knowledge of the recent technologies and communication systems.
“Therefore, this collaboration effort in turning the vision of building Unimas-Sacofa Telecommunication Lab into reality is the golden fruit of the long and prosperous relationship between Unimas and Sacofa.
“I hope that through the establishment of the Unimas-Sacofa Telecomm Lab, all parties will reap the benefits and rewards and in addition to that, will establish good relationship between university and industries in order to develop quality human capital,” he added.
Also present at the launching ceremony were Sacofa chief executive officer Sudartono Osman and Unimas Board of Directors chairman Datuk Dr Hatta Solhi.
