According to the organiser and member of Central Executive Committee (CEC) for Association of Research and Development Movement of Singai Sarawak (Redeems) Jiller Bimbang, a new category has been added to this year’s beauty pageant.

“There will also be a pageant competition for male participants called ‘Bujang Pogan 2015’,” she said when met at the Redeems Centre on May 17.

“In our community, there is no specific name for such pageant competition. But in Singai, we use the terms ‘Sikora’ which means ‘bintang’ (star) to represent the most beautiful girl, while ‘Pogan’ which means ‘warrior’ will represent the strongest and bravest man,” she explained.

The annual beauty pageant is organised by Redeems as one of the programmes for Redeems Gawai Dayak Carnival.

She explained that this will be the second year organising the male pageant after it was first introduced in 2013. It was not held last year.

The 10 male candidates for ‘Bujang Pogan 2015’ include Stevie Astly Robbart, Gregory Ghausse, Van Vacqur Cotter, Camillus Kilau Budit, Rigerier Assty Arries, James Macwester, Ronaldo Sang, Allan Bacelon Gunban, Robert Inde, and Terence Uden. They will be judged based on the same criteria.

They will be competing for the title at the Grand Final taking place on June 12 at 8pm at the centre.

“This year, the prize will be slightly different from previous years especially in terms of cash which is higher,” she said.

There will also be other subsidiary titles to be won including Mister Favourite and Mister Fitness for the Bujang Pogan category, while for Dayung Sikora are Miss Favourite, Miss Photogenic, and Miss Talent.

Jiller pointed out that this is the 10th edition of the beauty pageant, and she attributed its success to it being the right platform for aspirants.

“The objective of having these pageant competitions is so that the new generation will get to know more about their culture especially among the Bidayuh community in Singai.

This will be the 10th anniversary for the carnival and it be held from June 11 to 14 at Redeems Centre at Singai, Bau. Apart from the pageant competitions, other highlights include cultural performances, and sales of foods and handicrafts.

The 10th Gawai Carnival Redeems opening ceremony themed at ‘1 Malaysia, Multi-Culture’ will be held at Redeems Community Hall in Singai, Bau on June 13.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem is expected to attend the ceremony that will start at 6.30pm with the highlight being the crowning of Dayung Sikora 2015.

Those who are interested to attend the opening ceremony can purchase dinner tickets from REDEEMS Kuching Office (above Maybank MJC) or www.redeems.my priced at RM1000, RM750, RM550 and RM400 per table, seating 10 people each.
