TWO SARAWAKIAN PARTICIPANTS MADE it to the next round of auditions on Hua Hee Karaoke, Malaysia’s top Hokkien TV singing competition that enters its eighth season this year, after an audition held at Premier 101 Xing Xiang Yuan Café, Kuching on April 5.

Both Kelly Ho, 17, and Lai Ming Kong, 25, performed Hokkien songs of their choice in a capella and were judged by their vocal abilities by judges Vincs Huang, Teh Bee Seng, and Danny Wong Cheun Ming.

Both Lai and Ho have auditioned before. Hailing from Kuching, Lai was finally selected on his second attempt, while for Ho, from Bintulu, it was her fourth.

“We are really excited that we managed to select these two who really do have good voice quality that exceeds our expectation,” said senior judge Vincs when met by The Borneo Post SEEDS after auditioning eight aspiring walk-in contestants.

“This competition aims to seek more new voices and talents who can really deliver contemporary Hokkien songs as well as have great passion in singing,” he added.

In their quest to discover the next singing sensation in East Malaysia, the team also held auditions in Kota Kinabalu. Out of 11 hopefuls, five were chosen.

The judges will be looking for 100 contestants, out of which 40 will advance to the next level. These 40 participants then will compete in several rounds, and have to charm the judges and audience with their vocals, stage prowess and talents in order to qualify for the finals and be among the top eight finalists.
