Sarawak State Library rocks New Year’s Eve

IT SEEMS AN UNLIKELY place to be for a New Year’s eve party, but on December 31, the Sarawak State Library celebrated their 15th Anniversary with a bang, complete with star-studded performances and activities fit for all ages.

With the concept ‘bring your own food’, the anniversary was celebrated with various activities such as health and entreprenuership talks, Get to Know Pustaka Negeri Exhibition, Spelling Bee Competition, Nestle Cooking Demo with Chef Muluk among many other events.

The event also included a movie marathon featuring ‘Superman: Man of Steel’, ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ and ‘Frozen’.

But the highlight of the celebration was none other than New Year’s Eve concert which started at 8.30 in the evening.

Local buskers Sonar Instinct and Sayu Ateng warmed up the floor with their own flavours of live bands.

Sonar Instinct used typical band instruments like guitars, keyboard and drums whereas Sayu Ateng wowed the audience with their mix of western instruments like the violin and guitar with our traditional ones like the sape.

The state library brought back winners of Pustaka Talent Search including Mahathir Zailani, Mohd Azirul Afzan Mohd Azmi and Syafiq Adri Fitri Jasmin to entertain the crowd.

Pustaka Talent Search was organised last September during the state library’s Knowledge Carnival.

Besides looking for new talents, the library also has its very own talents.

Proving that their staff was not just into books but music too, the library invited their own Library Assistant Suzanna Abdullah from Pustaka Miri to perform.

Suzanna put the crowd in dancing mood with her rendition of Mexican folk song ‘La Bamba’.

Artists from local record label CQ Music also took the stage on the New Year’s Eve.

Accompanied by live band D’ Cipta, CQ Music artist Nur Damia Cassandra showed she was a powerhouse vocalist with Beyonce’s song ‘Listen’.

Another CQ Music entertainer Syamin Jasmi blew the crowd away with songs ‘Malaikat’ and ‘Lagi dan Lagi’.

The concert also showcased two singers from reality TV show Mentor Legend 2014 Amy and Mal Imran.

All who attended welcome the brand new year by blasting confetti into the air with party poppers distributed by Pustaka’s staff.

Sarawak State Library’s 15th Anniversary Celebration did not end after the clock stroke 12 as it continued with dancing and lucky draws.

Also present during the event were Kuching City North Commission (DBKU) Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai, Sarawak State Library’s chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr Hamid Bugo and chief executive officer Rashidah Bolhassan.
