Yoyo players take the ultimate challenge this weekend in competition

FIFTY YOYO PLAYERS from across Malaysia will compete in the Malaysian Yoyo Ultimate Challenge this weekend at the Riverside Shopping Complex.

The tournament is organised by Team Yo-Blitz together with the 1BFF Pending Sports and Recreation Club.

According to Team Yo-Blitz leader, Ryan Han, the participants consists of 11 players from Selangor, Johor, Kelantan, Perak, Sabah, Terengganu and Penang as well as other players from Sarawak that include beginner- and advanced-level yoyo players.

“This is the first time that we (Team YoBlitz) and the 1BFF Pending Sports and Recreation Club is organising a yoyo competition together,” he said during a press conference held earlier.

“The Malaysian Yoyo Ultimate Challenge is organised to create something different, apart from the Sarawak Regional Yoyo Contest that has been held for five consecutive years. With the support that we received from Sarawak Ministry of Social Development and Urbanisation and 1BFF, we hope that this tournament will become a yearly event for years to come,” he added.

Four-time World Yoyo Champion from Japan, Daisuke Shimada, will be a guest judge for the tournament where he will also be performing.

Daisuke will also be performing for the opening act during the URD1 Youth Carnival opening ceremony to be held this October 6 at Padang Merdeka.

Other judges who will be judging during the tournament is Malaysian seven-time National Champion Muhammad Shakeel, six-time National Champion Ewin Ee, yoyo master Wong Kok Jen.

The tournament semi-final rounds are being held today Oct 4, from 10.30 a.m. onwards to 6pm while the Grand Finale will be held Oct 5, from 10.30am to 7pm.

Participants will be competing in eight categories which include the 1A Single Handed String Trick Division, 2A Double Handed Looping Division, 3A Double Handed Spinning Division, 4A OFF String Division, 5A Free Hand Division, Invitational Division, Novice Division and Artistic Division.

“We plan to bring yoyo to Sukma Games in the near future. Next year, players from Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak will fly to Tokyo for the World YoYo Contest representing Malaysia,” Han added.

The tournament is part of the ‘You Are The One 2014’ programme organised by 1BFF with the support from Sarawak Ministry of Social Development and Urbanisation.
All winners of the above will receive Trophy for Champion, 1st and 2nd Runner Up, together with t-shirt and yoyo from sponsors.

From the top five categories, 1A to 5A, the champion will automatically be eligible to contest in another category called ‘Champion of Champion’.

The winner of this category will be crowned as “Champion of Champion” with a Trophy, cash prize of RM500 sponsored by Metega Fertiliser Company and also a bandana sponsored by Logitech.

Apart from these prizes, all participants will also receive a certificate of attendance.

Sponsors include YoYoJoker Japan, YoYoSkeel, Kedai YoYo, Blksens, Kiasar Trading Company, Green Food Corner, Long House Clothing, Motordrillz String, Telekom Malaysia, Jack and Jill, Metaga Fertiliser Company and Logitech.
