Hydra’s synergy rejuvenating Malaysia’s rock music scene
ROCK BAND ‘HYDRA’ is no newbie on the Malaysian nightlife scene. Performing at different venues, doing live performances, music events and international festivals since its inception in 2003, the band has matured to be the top of its kind in the country, taking Malaysia by storm with their superb covers of classic rock ballads.
Based in Kuala Lumpur, Hydra is a five-man band led by its vocalist and guitar frontman, Lan, guitarist G-Beng, bassist Boy, drummer Aizat and keyboardist, Jezz.
Their original song, ‘Hujung Mentari’ which was also their debut single featured on the soundtrack of last year’s movie ‘Dampak’ was nominated for the Best Rock and Best Music Video categories in the VIMA Music Awards. Their lead singer, Lan was also recently awarded the VIMA 2014 FZ Best Malaysian Vocalist by fz.com.
VIMA Music Awards is a very significant award to be won by local artistes as it supports those who really deserve to be recognised. According to fz.com, Lan had to undergo two polls and do one acoustic performance before a panel of judges at fz.com’s studio.
“What makes Hydra different from the rest is the fact that each band member does not only play instruments fabulously but the unique point about Hydra is that every member sings,” Lan commented during a press conference held at Merdeka Palace Hotel & Suites on August 14.
Their second time performing in Kuching, Hydra was showcasing their new debut EP album, ‘Sinergi’, an album that features five tracks, four in Malay and one in English.
The band added that the central themes on ‘Sinergi’ is about love, peace and unity and the songs in the album brings messages of different forms of love in lots of different ways, based on their personal experience and the things going around them.
‘Sinergi’ also refers to the symbiotic relationship between the band members, the combination of different parts to create something bigger and better, reflecting their efforts to bring something different creatively and musically to the album and the local music scene.
Band manager Sivabalan Sundram added that the band had grown tremendously, placing themselves in many scenes including live performances, events and international festivals, including Singapore, Cambodia, and soon in USA and Germany.
Hydra will also be the feature act for World Animal Groove Music Festival by Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) on October 24-25 this year.
