Calling all young talented bands throughout Sarawak!
THE ONE SARAWAK YOUTH BAND Challenge 2014 is opening up their entries to young talented bands to battle it out and win amazing cash prizes!
Speaking in a press conference held here in Kuching on Aug 19, Youth Development (Urban) Assistant Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Hamzah said, “This event was mooted by Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom Minister of Social Development and was aimed to be a platform for youths between the ages of 15 to 40 to showcase the talent through music.”
The band challenge is expected to draw more than 250 bands from throughout Sarawak.
“Judging for the whole event will be conducted by renowned Malaysian artists. Efforts are being made to secure artists like Edry KRU, Rahim Maarof, songstress Syafinaz Selamat and guitarist Zulkif from Headwind to be judges for the event,” said Karim.
This battle of the bands is open to youths born in Sarawak only and they must be between 15 to 40 years of age on the date of the finals.
It is only open for bands that do not have any recording contracts at the time of registration.
Auditions will be held at four locations; Sarikei Civic Centre on Aug 31 and Sept 1, Miri Civic Centre on Sept 8 and 9, Kuching Civic Centre on Sept 15 and 16, and Sri Aman Civic Centre on Sept 19.
Karim pointed out, “The best 20 bands will be selected to perform in the semi-finals while the best 10 bands will be selected to compete in the finals.”
Champion will walk home with a RM7,000 cash prize with trophy, first runner up RM3,500 with trophy, second runner up RM1,500 with trophy and three consolation prizes worth RM500 each.
Besides, there will be also jury awards for Best Performance (Band), Best Vocalist, Best Drummer, Best Guitarist for lead or bass.
Best performance will walk away with cash money RM1,000 with trophy, and the rest of the jury awards RM500 with trophy each.
The bands must comprise a minimum of four band members.
He also informed that the semi-final will be held on Oct 10 and final on Oct 12 during the URD1 Sarawak Youth Carnival 2014 and consist of approximately 100 tents with one main stage.
The registration forms are available at all 12 Civic Centre offices and selected jamming studios in Sarawak.

The original payment receipt must be submitted together with the entry forms. To avoid the loss of your registration form, it is compulsory to use registered mail or Pos Laju.
The winners of this competition will be invited to perform at the World Animal Groove (WAG) Music Festival 2014 in October and Petronas Charity Event.
“Our aim is to make this carnival an annual event and its supporting events a great success and leave a lasting legacy for the Ministry of Social Development and Government of Sarawak on providing youth the opportunity to showcase their talents,” Karim stated.
According to Sutaghani Zaidoll, the organising chairman of The One Sarawak Youth Band Challenge 2014, building up to the carnival there are various other activities including URD1 Dota2 Challenge on Sep 27 and 28, and Malaysian Yoyo Ultimate Challenge on Oct 4 and 5 both at Riverside Shopping Complex.
