RAMADAN, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar is a month of fasting for all Muslims worldwide.

Traditionally, dates are the first to be consumed during iftar, or the fast-breaking meal, but with the Original Macam-Macam Ada Mega buffet at Grand Margherita Hotel Kuching, diners will have a spread of over 200 mouth-watering dishes to choose from.

Dubbed the biggest buffet in Kuching during the Ramadhan season, Grand Margherita is set to give a culinary adventure with Cambodian, Penangite, Indonesian, Lebanese, South Indian, Japanese and of course, Malaysian cuisines.

The star of the Ramadhan buffet for me was the Spit-roasted Spring Lamb. With a chef standing by ready to carve a tender piece of lamb for you, you can have it the way I did – stuffed in a pita bread and a few dashes of minty Lebanese yogurt dip.

The Cambodian, Penang and Indonesian dishes were worth a try because the chefs were flown in from their respective countries. Talk about authenticity!

Be ready to devour some Indo-Chinese signature dishes at the Mekong food station where you can try the Vietnamese Pancake with Condiments, Century Egg Salad, Stir Fried Clam with Chilli Garlic Sauce, Mekong Casserole Crab with Glass Noodles.

Thinking of having a taste of Indonesia? Daging Cabe Hijau, Cumi Masak Pedas, Ayam Kari dengan Tauhu Kering, Ikan Assam Pedas and Opor Ayam will allow you to have a taste of Indonesia without you actually flying there.

Allow the kitchen of Grand Margherita Hotel to whisk you away to Penang with Penang hawker favourites such as Oyster Omelette, Penang Char Kway Teow, Penang Assam Laksa, Ju Hu Eng Chai or Kangkung Sotong, Loh Bah Penang and Hokkien Prawn Mee Soup.

For a true hawker favourite, the Char Kway Teow is cooked on the spot with your preference, with egg or without, more soy sauce or less soy sauce, your call!

BEAUTY IN THE SMOKE: The Penang Char Kway Teow is fried against the backdrop of the Sarawak River.

The BBQ station is another customer favourite at the mega buffet. It is heaven for carnivores where diners can choose chicken, lamb or beef, satay or sausages.

Besides that, Grand Margherita also has South Indian station, BBQ station, sushi station and even a fried food station.

If you long for the keropok lekor that you usually get at bazaar Ramadhan, no worries as it’s served at the mega buffet at Grand Margherita too.

HEAVEN FOR SWEET TOOTHS: The variety of desserts on the dessert station is to die for.

What is buffet dinner without my personal favourite, the dessert station?

Thank goodness we always have room for dessert. With their extensive variety of desserts from the traditional ‘kuehs’ and sweet ‘buburs’ to international pastries, it’s hard to decide.

TEMPTING: Who knew pumpkin and palm sugar worked well together in this steamed pumpkin pudding?

To make choosing even harder, the desserts station also offers dessert from the Mekong regions and our very Malaysian favourites of ‘ais kacang’ and ‘Penang Rojak Buah’.

LUSCIOUS: The selection of Mekong sweets is a taste of Cambodia, thanks to the Cambodian chefs.

MUST-TRY: This delightfully soft steamed banana cake is another must-try from the land formerly known as the Khmer Empire, Cambodia.
