Sports are very much a part of the Brazilian lifestyle, especially football, and one athletic export that is becoming popular worldwide is ‘capoeira’, a martial art popular all over the country.

Capoeira’s increasing popularity can be due to how it combines elements of martial arts, music, and dance.

For those looking to take part or learn more about this martial art, the second edition of the Simplesmente Capoeira, will see capoeiristas (practitioners of Capoeira) from different countries and regions gathering in Kuching to celebrate the joy of capoeira.

Held from April 23 – 26, one of the activities to be held during the event includes Capoeira Workshops which will be held on the April 23-24 at Stampark Place Badminton Hall from 7pm to 10pm.

These workshops will be conducted by Professor Rafael from MSC – Malaysia and Contra Claudinho from Grupo Bantus Capoeira Singapore, and aims to educate the public about the art of Capoeira, as well as showing new techniques and knowledge to existing MSC Sarawak students, apart from acting as an exchange programme for participants from Sarawak, Sabah, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

According to the founder of Movimento Simples De Capoeira (MSC) Sarawak Malcolm Wu, the capoeira workshop will be open to the public to participate and will be a good opportunity for them to try out a few simple capoeira moves and win prizes.

The grading ceremony (Batizado e Troca de Corda) will also be held for MSC Sarawak’s existing students.

“The students have come far this year and improved. These are among the first Sarawakian’s future capoeiristas. As many as 10 students will be graded this year and the group has also gotten bigger over the year with increased interest from the public,” he added when speaking in a press conference held at Seminar Room, Stampark Swimming Pool here yesterday.

A ‘Samba de Roda Workshop’ will also take place at 3.30pm after the grading ceremony at The Summer Shopping Mall and the event will end with music and dance performance from 9pm onwards at 5 Foot Way Bistro & Café in Kuching.

Apart from that, other activities also will include a public performance of Capoeira (Roda de Rua) at The Summer Shopping Mall from 8.30pm – 9.30pm on Apr 25 while the highlight of the event to take place at the mall will commence from 11am onwards on Apr 26.

Organised by MSC with support from the Embassy of the Federative Republic of Brazil-Malaysia, the event is also supported by Ouryouth.my, Planet Borneo Lodge, Samba-Ipanema Footwear, Stampark Place and 5 Foot Way Bistro & Cafe.
