KUCHING: Out of every 500 births in Malaysia, one infant will be diagnosed with cerebral palsy, and 9 out of 10 of those diagnosed will be bedridden.

Although there is no cure for this congenital disorder, various types of treatment can help reduce the effects of cerebral palsy, which includes physical therapy which evaluates muscle tone, strength and gait, occupational therapy which reviews the child’s ability to perform tasks of self-help and care, and speech therapy which evaluates the child’s ability to speak and understand speech.

Wishesland (also known as Kuching & Samarahan Division Cerebral Palsy Association) is organising a charity run called ‘Wishesland Charity Run-Run for the Children’ to be held Apr 27 this year at Publique Jalan Airport here to raise funds in an effort to help children with cerebral palsy.

Wishesland provides various awareness programmes to educate the public about the disorder and provide support to parents of children with cerebral palsy. Currently they are providing treatment to more than 30 children.

According to the President of Wishesland, Chi Poh Yung, “We are looking to achieve our target to help 100 children this year as we believe there are a lot of children with cerebral palsy in the state, especially in rural areas.”

The funds raised from the charity run will go to improving the rehabilitation facilities at Wishesland’s centre located at Crookshank Road and the operating costs of the association.

Also present during the press conference was President of Sarawak Tennis Association and director of Ouryouth.my, Datuk Patrick Liew.
