Cyclists can take in sights during up-and-coming Heritage Ride
KUCHING: Cycling is a fast growing sport and it is hoped that the Heritage Ride 2014 to be held Feb 23 this year will receive continuous governmental support and highlight the need for more cycling lanes for cyclists here in Kuching in the near future.
Organised by Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Satok Youth and Satok Community Sports Club (KSK), Heritage Ride 2014 aims to encourage the public to get involved in healthy recreational activities while promoting tourism and Kuching’s historical heritage sites through cycling in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year (VMY) 2014.
The 5km ride will start and end at Padang Merdeka and will pass through several historical sites and attractions around Kuching as well as villages around Satok area.
“We are inviting and expecting 1,000 bicycle riders from around Kuching which may comprise those from various cycling clubs, as well as the public from school children to adults and elder citizens of various backgrounds to take part in this first ever cycling event organised by Satok Community Sports Club,” said Satok KSK chairman Irwan Zulkarnain Muhammad Hasbie during a press conference held January 23.
“Through the collaboration with Tourism Malaysia, we would also like to invite foreign visitors who will be staying in hotels nearby to join in if they are interested and we will provide bicycles for them to ride during the event, and through this, we are hoping that local Kuching citizens will get the chance to become mini tourism ambassadors for tourists visiting Kuching,” he added.
Participation entry is for free but participants are encouraged to donate at least RM1 as registration during the event to be distributed to charity bodies and associations which will be determined later.
During the event, participants will be given T-Shirts, helmets and stickers. There will also be lucky draws.
The Heritage Ride 2014 is supported by Tourism Malaysia, Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), Ministry of Tourism, Information Department, Road Safety Department (JPJ), Yayasan Rakyat 1Malaysia, Sarawak Cycling Association, police, Department of Civil Defence Malaysia (JPAM) and the People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela).
