Promoting Chinese chess

KUCHING: A total of 41 participants involving youths under 30 competed in the annual Chinese Chess tournament organised by Kuching Xiangqi (Chinese Chess) Association on December 28.
Vice chairman of the association, Sim Siang Boon said the objective of the event was mainly to promote the game as well as to develop interest among youths towards competing in chess competitions.
“The response of the participants towards the tournament is pretty amazing and we hope that participation from the youth in Kuching will increase in years to come as Sarawak currently has one of the best teams in chess competition,” he told the media.
There were also six participants from Sabah who joined in the competition.
Wong Chung Seng was named the champion and won prize money worth RM500 and trophy.
First runner-up Vincent Chai Wen Xuan received RM400 plus trophy, second runner-up Tequila Lim received RM300 plus trophy while third runner-up Sheu Chun Hao received RM200 plus trophy.
Four successive winners had also received RM100 each and another four successive ones RM50 each.
Participants competed in individual category, and each of them had registered with a fee of RM15.
The annual tournament was held here at ST3 Shopping Mall and was sponsored by IP Unique Enterprise.
