The most trending searches in 2013 goes to the small town east of Sabah, Lahad Datu due to the standoff that occurred in February. Our relatively peaceful country was shaken by militants from Southern Philippines claiming their right over Sabah by intruding Lahad Datu first before proceeded to neighbouring towns such as Kunak and Semporna.

The claim was made by a group calling themselves the Royal Security Forces of the Sultanate of Sulu and North Borneo and  were directed by Jamalul Kiram III, one of the claimants to the throne of the Sultanate of Sulu. Both sides lost lives with total of 64 deaths and nine of it them Malaysian forces.

Part of Budget 2013 was to improve the living standards of the Youth Communication Plan (YCP) and to promote the development of e-commerce. Malaysian citizens ages 21 to 30 years old with monthly salary between RM3000 or less were allowed  RM200 rebate for smartphones.

This led Malaysian youths searching for the unit in charge of YCP, Malaysian Communications Multimedia Commission (SKMM), earning SKMM as the second most trending search in 2013.

Sitting at the third spot most trending movie 2013 in Malaysia is Pacific Rim, an American science fiction monster film. Topping the most searched song was not a surprise at all; Gwiyomi. To add to the craze, few competitions from notable companies in Malaysia searching the best video of gwiyomi were held this year.  A phrase which sounds more like an instant noodle brand, gwiyomi really led Malaysians to search what it was all about.

Other top charts include most searched car, fashion brands, GE13 politicians, Malaysian news sites, Malaysian TV series, sport personalities, mobile searches, trending Malaysian celebrities and trending Malaysian Movies.

I am surprised few events did not make it into Google Trend 2013 like Miley Cyrus’s twerking incident in MTV Music Award for example. I guess it is just another story of a young Hollywood starlet gone wild that even Malaysians are tired of hearing.

Besides Hollywood, South Korea’s entertainment industry is making its mark in Malaysia. We have Running Man as one of the most trending TV shows whereas Gwiyomi and Gangnam Style as trendiest songs.
